According to investigators, 28-year-old Brianna Marie Grier suffered “severe injuries” and her away in the hospital six days after being put in the backseat without a seatbelt and with her hands shackled in front of her.
Investigators from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) reported that one of the car’s rear doors “was never closed” after speaking with witnesses and analyzing body camera footage.
Grier, a Black woman, was detained on July 15 after her family contacted 911 when she was experiencing a mental health crisis, according to information provided by her family to The Daily Beast .
Her relatives informed the publication that they were concerned she had stopped taking her medicine because she had been exhibiting more troubling symptoms of schizophrenia.
Grier’s family told the newspaper that deputies opted to arrest her after smelling alcohol on her breath. She was brought into custody, but police have not stated why.
Grier allegedly threatened to hurt herself during her detention and refused to get into the patrol car, according to investigators.
Two Hancock County Sheriff’s Office officers worked to get her inside the vehicle, but as they were doing so, one of them turned around and opened the other rear passenger side door, failing to shut it before the car left.
The deputy erroneously “thought he closed the rear passenger side door,” according to investigators. According to the GBI, the investigation is still active and ongoing.
Grier’s parents have called for an explanation while also expressing their sorrow over their daughter’s passing.

Ben Crump, a well-known civil rights attorney, has been hired by the family to look into the mistakes that resulted in Grier falling out of the automobile.

He told Grier’s parents, “We won’t allow them throw your baby daughter’s death under the rug.”
