After dying while attempting to save an American girl off the shore of Okinawa, the inventor of the best-selling trading card game in history is being hailed as a “hero.”

Kazuki Takahashi, 60, passed away in July as a result of the unfortunate incident, which went weeks without an official explanation.

According to the Japanese Coast Guard, officials spoke with Takahashi’s family, who showed a desire to downplay the tragedy so as not to take attention away from the baby girl’s continued care.
